Highfield Fest BMX Competition and Family Fun Day

Once again the Town Council in conjunction with Fox Head Europe, Prudhoe Youth Service and Northumberland County Council were able to facilitate a BMX competition and family fun day at Highfield Park on Sunday 26th June.  Everything on the day was free, funded by the Town Council and the weather and the setting were magnificent.  It was a great success not only in terms of the weather but the fact that families stayed at the park well after 5pm when the BMX competition and displays had ended, proving what a great open space this is in the Town.

Young people from aged 8 to 17 entered the competition and bravely jumped and entertained on the newly re-surfaced track in front of a noisy Prudhoe crowd as well as wowing the Fox Europe professionals.

Girls

There was only one girl again this year but hopefully the skills and courage Shannon showed will encourage more girls next year-come on girls show the lads what you’re made of!

This event is championed by Neville Potts, a local professional and enthusiast and was sponsored by Fox Head Europe.  Fox not only offered sporting commentary during the BMX competition but also entertained the crowds with trial demonstrations, a promotional stand and free merchandise.

This year Mister Disco Man John Robson not only provided music but brought along some addictive and challenging games like those featured on the TV quiz show ‘The Cube’.  The young and the old had fun testing their dexterity, speed and concentration – many showed they may have what it takes to compete on the show!

Those too young to enter the BMX competition still enjoyed the day bouncing, climbing and bungee-ing on the impressive inflatable entertainment by NBK Leisure as well as being turned into dogs, clowns, superhero’s and the like or having glitter tattoo’s by Painted Faces by Julie.  Parents were pleasantly surprised that the youngsters could enjoy all the attractions ‘free of charge’ with as many goes as they liked only having to put their hands in their pockets for ice-creams and refreshments.

The Town Council were very lucky to have the assistance of The Army Cadets, who, led by John Scott took care of marshalling and car parking.  Even in the soaring temperatures the Cadets represented the service in uniform demonstrating their commitment to the job in hand.  The Army Cadets were not the only uniformed presence at the event as the local police were also in attendance offering bike security and the chance to get locked up in the van – voluntarily of course!

The Town Council would like to thank everyone who attended and supported this event that saw numbers in excess of 700 having a great family day out.  Hopefully we will see you all again next year for another fun-filled day.  Anyone with any ideas or feedback about Highfield Fest is welcome to contact the Town Council at prudhoetc@hotmail.com.
