POPPY APPEAL LAUNCH WEDNESDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2024
This year’s Poppy Appeal was launched just ahead of the national launch on 24th October. Additionally, details for this year’s Remembrance Sunday Parade have been announced.
The commemorations on Sunday 10th November, will commence at the Prudhoe & District United Services Club (Legion) car park, where participants in the parade should muster by 10:30am. Uniformed Services and organisations will parade with the North Tyneside Pipe Band along Front Street, proceeding to Kepwell Court and culminating at the Lychgate War Memorial at St. Mary Magdalene Church. The service will begin at 10:55am, followed by the Act of Remembrance at 11:00am and the wreath-laying ceremony. Participants are advised to dress warmly, as a road closure will be in effect. The return parade will be giving ‘eyes right’ at the Royal British Legion plaque on The Glade.
Mayor Cllr Angie Scott, a proud supporter of the Royal British Legion, is especially honoured to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday on behalf of the people of Prudhoe. She stated, “I know that historically the people of Prudhoe have been very generous in their support of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families, as well as in their attendance on Remembrance Sunday. It is vital to keep the message of Remembrance alive. I encourage everyone to give generously to the 2024 Poppy Appeal and to show appreciation for our local collectors by offering them your time.”
Poppy collectors will be back out in the community at Prudhoe Co-op, Aldi, Morrisons Blaydon and collection tins have been distributed to local shops, pubs, restaurants, and schools. The lamppost poppies have once again been installed, and we encourage window displays in local shops. The remarkable knitted poppy tribute on The Glade has also been expanded.
The poppy was first worn as an act of remembrance just over 100 years ago and has since become an enduring symbol of support for our Armed Forces, both past and present. Every poppy counts, and any donation will significantly impact the lives of the Armed Forces community, who have given so much for their country.
