Prudhoe Town Council Seeks Clarity on Proposed First School Reorganisation
Following the Ordinary Meeting of Prudhoe Town Council held on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, Councillors unanimously agreed that based on the information available, they could not support the proposed reorganisation of first schools in the Prudhoe area. The council has submitted a formal request to Ms Alice Witherow, Chief Executive Officer of the Cheviot Learning Trust, for more information regarding the proposed reorganisation of first schools in the Prudhoe area.
On behalf of the Council and the wider community, we seek clarity and transparency on a range of critical matters relating to the consultation, including:-
- Pupil numbers and forecasting, including methodology and data validation
- Financial modelling and future projections underpinning the proposed closures
- Scenario planning and alternatives considered during the decision-making process
- Impact on SEND provision, early years, and wraparound care
- Buildings, infrastructure, and consultation compliance
Prudhoe Town Council is also calling on the Cheviot Learning Trust and Northumberland County Council to:-
- Provide full and transparent responses to the questions raised by the Council; and
- Extend the current consultation period to allow sufficient time for the gathering and analysis of relevant information.
“This is a matter of considerable concern to our community,” said Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, Chair of Prudhoe Town Council. “The proposed changes to our local first schools could have far-reaching implications for pupils, families, and the long-term sustainability of education provision in Prudhoe. Our children’s education, wellbeing, and future opportunities are at the heart of this issue, and it is essential that every decision is guided by clear evidence, thorough planning, and careful consideration of all potential impacts.
We are particularly mindful of the needs of children requiring SEND support, the availability of early years and wraparound care, and the importance of ensuring safe and accessible travel to and from school for all pupils. Our community relies on strong, sustainable schools, and any reorganisation must fully consider the social, educational, and practical consequences for families across Prudhoe.”
In light of these concerns, Prudhoe Town Council has sought the support of Joe Morris MP and County Councillors Lawrence O’Donnell, Angie Scott, and Gordon Stewart, and requested that this matter be brought to the attention of The Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP, Secretary of State for Education.
Prudhoe Town Council fully supports parents, carers, and the wider community in seeking clarity and transparency regarding the proposed school reorganisation. It is vital that the concerns of Prudhoe Town Council, and the community we represent, are recognised, acknowledged, and given appropriate consideration at a national level. We urge that any decisions affecting local education are made with full accountability, rigorous transparency, and a clear focus on the best interests of our children, ensuring that their education, wellbeing, and future opportunities remain at the forefront of the process.
