Tributes to Billy Callender

Billy Callender was born in Mickley in 1903, from working in West Wylam pit, he played for Prudhoe Castle FC to later signing as goalkeeper with Crystal Palace in 1923. He made 225 appearances for the London club in the 1920s and 30s.  He tragically took his own life after the death of his beloved fiance in 1932, and is now buried at the Edgewell Cemetery in Prudhoe.

On Sunday 24 July 2022, which marks 90 years from his death, Crystal Palace supporters along with local Prudhoe Town Councillors, representatives from local youth football teams, Prudhoe Local History Society to name but a few, visited his grave to pay tribute to the club legend.

Cllr Tracy Gilmore laid a wreath on behalf of Prudhoe Town Council.
