Prudhoe Town Council has a vacancy for a councillor in the Castle and Eltringham Ward that we are looking to fill by co-option.
Becoming a town councillor will give you the opportunity to get involved with various projects and interests in the community. We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect their community to put themselves forward and make a change!
To be eligible to be a town councillor, you need to be:
- 18 or over
- A British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of any other member state of the European Union.
and at least one of the following must apply:
- You are and continue to be registered as a local government elector for the Parish and continue to be an elector.
- You have resided in the Parish for the past twelve months or rented/tenanted land in the Parish.
- Your principal or only place of work has been in the Parish for the past twelve months.
- You have lived within three miles of the Parish for the past twelve months.
There are certain disqualifications for being a parish councillor, (see Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972), of which the main are:
- Holding a paid office or employment under the Council
- Are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order.
- Have been sentenced to prison for three months or more (including suspended sentences) during the five years before election day.
- Have been convicted of a corrupt or illegal practice by an election court.
- Are subject to any relevant notification requirements, or a relevant order, in respect of a sexual offence.
If you are interested in becoming a town councillor, please read our Co-option policy for details on our co-option procedure. You will need to complete two forms – a short application form, as well as an eligibility form (attached below). Applications close at 5pm on Wednesday 17th September.
The applications will be considered at our September Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 25th September at 7pm, where applicants will be invited to introduce themselves. More details will be sent on receipt of your application.
