Proposed Memorial Garden at Old Edgewell Cemetery, Prudhoe

Land to the North of the Chapel

Prudhoe Town Council is seeking views from residents on a proposal to create a memorial garden on the land located to the north of the chapel within Old Edgewell Cemetery.

The Council proposes to invite tenders from suitably qualified contractors for the design, construction, and delivery of an environmentally sustainable memorial garden. The site is currently grassed, with narrow planted beds along the driveway, and is separated from the consecrated area and existing graves by a tarmacked roadway. Many of the older graves in this part of the cemetery date from the early 20th century. While most no longer receive floral tributes, the Town Council recognises and values their historical and community significance.

Subject to the outcome of this public consultation and the level of support received, the memorial garden would be designed, installed, and maintained by experienced gardeners. The planting scheme is expected to use native perennial species, enhancing biodiversity while creating a visually appealing and tranquil space for quiet reflection and remembrance.

What are your views on the proposed establishment of an orchard planted with heritage fruit tree varieties?

Edgewell Cemetery, which includes war graves, holds considerable historic and emotional importance for the community. The proposed memorial garden aims to provide a respectful, low-maintenance area for contemplation, while also improving the overall appearance and environmental quality of this part of the cemetery.

Funding for the design and construction of the memorial garden would be drawn from the existing budget allocated for cemetery preservation and maintenance. This investment would complement wider plans to preserve, repair, and safeguard gravestones and graves within this older section of the cemetery.
