The green agenda is raising the roof…
Prudhoe Town Council agreed to install bus shelters at stops on Stoneyflat Bank, West Wylam back in July 2020 (both sides of the road, travelling east and west). Whilst delays are frustrating and the goal is for bus users to be able to shelter comfortably, this time the delay may have a positive ending.
At our meeting last night the Council agreed to pursue the idea of a ‘living roof’ bus shelter and to give businesses in the town the opportunity to part fund this. This demonstrates a real commitment to the impact of the green agenda on our town and hopefully will result in some partnership working to achieve this.
We are not the first Council to understand the value of bus shelters for this purpose, sedum roofs are popping up all over. The idea for our shelters was first raised some time ago, by former Councillor, Russ Greig. Having now been provided with the costs and intention to install new shelters, the Council is excited at the prospect of taking this forward. This could potentially be a pledge for all new shelters, Stoneyflat Bank being the first of many. The Council will need to look at the level of funding available and research any maintenance implications.
The Council hopes to be in a position to place an order for these shelter at their next meeting in November, so the wait will not be much longer.
A green sedum roof on a bus shelter brings a number of benefits. They help to absorb carbon, give back clean air, attenuate water, and add green space which attracts bees, insects, and other pollinators. Not to mention they look good, especially from the top deck of the bus.
